Overloaded Dishwasher Causes Kitchen Flooding in Eugene?

4/16/2024 (Permalink)

An overloaded dishwasher is shown. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams respond to water damage emergencies often in Eugene. An overloaded dishwasher can cause water damage in several ways. When a dishwasher is packed beyond its capacity, dishes may obstruct the spray arms or prevent the detergent dispenser from opening properly.

Inadequate cleaning due to overloading can prompt users to run additional cycles or select longer wash times, increasing the duration of water exposure and the risk of leaks or overflows. Moreover, excessive weight from overloaded dishes can strain the dishwasher's door seal or cause it to warp, compromising its ability to contain water during operation.

Additionally, overcrowded dishwashers may lead to improper loading, with dishes positioned in a way that obstructs the drainage system or prevents the door from closing securely. This can cause water to leak onto the floor during the wash or rinse cycles.

Over time, repeated overloading of the dishwasher can exacerbate wear and tear on internal components, such as the pump, hoses, and seals, increasing the likelihood of leaks or malfunctions that result in water damage.

To prevent water damage from an overloaded dishwasher, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's loading instructions, avoid overcrowding, and ensure that dishes are appropriately arranged to facilitate efficient water circulation and drainage during the wash cycle.

Burst Pipe Causes Widespread Flooding in Eugene Home?

4/9/2024 (Permalink)

A wall is opened to expose a broken pipe, the cause of widespread flooding inside a home. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams are ready to respond to water damage and flooding emergencies day and night in Eugene. A burst pipe can quickly escalate into a flooding emergency within a home due to the sudden release of pressurized water.

When a pipe bursts, it releases a large volume of water rapidly into the surrounding area. This water can flood rooms, causing extensive damage to floors, walls, furniture, and belongings. The severity of the flooding depends on various factors, such as the size of the pipe, the water pressure, and the burst's location.

The initial gush of water can be particularly destructive, leading to immediate saturation of surfaces and potential structural damage. As the water continues to flow, it can spread rapidly throughout the property, infiltrating carpets, seeping into walls, and pooling in low-lying areas. If not addressed promptly, the standing water can create an environment conducive to mold growth, further exacerbating the damage and posing health risks to occupants.

Also, flooding from a burst pipe can disrupt electrical systems, increasing the risk of electrical hazards and fires. Prompt action is essential to mitigate the damage caused by a burst pipe, including shutting off the main water supply, extracting standing water, and repairing or replacing the damaged pipe to prevent further leaks.

Franklin Resident Prevents Water Intrusion from Heavy Rain by Clearing Rain Gutters?

4/2/2024 (Permalink)

A rain gutter is clogged with debris. We respond to storm and water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams are trusted leaders in storm damage restoration services in Franklin, Oregon. Keeping rain gutters and downspouts clear of debris is crucial for preventing water intrusion during heavy rain events.

Gutters and downspouts are critical in directing rainwater away from the home's foundation and preventing water from pooling near the structure. When gutters become clogged with leaves, twigs, or other debris, water cannot flow freely through them, causing them to overflow or back up.

During heavy rain events, this overflow or backup can result in water cascading down the house's exterior walls, seeping into the foundation, or accumulating around the perimeter. Over time, water intrusion can lead to structural damage, foundation cracks, and mold growth indoors.

By keeping rain gutters and downspouts clear of debris, homeowners ensure proper rainwater drainage away from the foundation and reduce the risk of water infiltration into the home. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning gutters and installing gutter guards to prevent debris buildup, can help mitigate the potential for water intrusion issues during heavy rain events.

Additionally, maintaining proper grading around the home and ensuring downspouts extend several feet away from the foundation further prevents water from pooling near the structure and causing damage.

Eugene Home Sustains Water Damage from Ice Dam Formation?

3/26/2024 (Permalink)

Icicles form along the eves of a house. We restore water damage from ice dams in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams restore ice dam damage in Eugene every year. In some cases, an ice dam can infiltrate an attic and cause water damage due to various factors.

First, snow accumulates on the roof during freezing temperatures. Heat escaping from the heated interior of the house warms the roof, causing the snow on top to melt. This melted snow then flows down to the colder eaves or overhangs.

At the eaves, where the temperature is lower, the melted snow refreezes, forming an ice dam. Subsequent melting snow can become trapped behind this ice dam, unable to flow off the roof as it should. Instead, it can seep beneath the shingles or roofing material and enter the attic.

Once in the attic, the water can cause various types of damage, including harm to the ceiling below, insulation deterioration, structural weakening, and the promotion of mold and mildew growth.

To prevent ice dams and associated water damage, homeowners should adequately insulate and ventilate their attics, clear excess snow from the roof, and ensure eaves and gutters are free of ice and debris. Installing ice and water barriers on the roof can also help stop water infiltration into the attic if ice dams form.

Inadequate Drainage Causes Water Intrusion Issues in Frankin Home?

3/19/2024 (Permalink)

Water covers the brick hardscape around a home during a heavy rain event. We restore stormwater damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams respond to water intrusion and flooding emergencies every year in Franklin, and some of these flooding events are caused by inadequate yard drainage. Proper drainage around a home is essential to prevent water pooling and water intrusion during heavy rain events. Drainage systems should slope away from the building for several critical reasons:

Crawl Space Flooding:  A sloping grade helps divert rainwater away from crawl spaces. Water can seep into these lower levels without proper drainage, causing flooding, structural damage, and mold growth.

Exterior Wall Preservation: Water pooling against exterior walls can lead to water intrusion and siding, insulation, and sheathing damage. Over time, this moisture can deteriorate the building envelope, promoting rot and allowing water to infiltrate the interior.

Landscape and Yard Protection: Adequate drainage prevents soil erosion and standing water in landscaped areas around the home. Without proper slopes, plants and trees can suffer, and the yard may become waterlogged, causing soil compaction and loss of usability.

Preventing Water Intrusion: By directing rainwater away from the building, proper drainage helps maintain the integrity of doors, windows, and the roof, reducing the risk of water intrusion, leaks, and subsequent damage to interior spaces.

Industrial-Grade Equipment Prevents Costly Broken Pipe Repair in Eugene?

3/5/2024 (Permalink)

A laundry room is flooded. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams use powerful, industrial-grade water extraction equipment for the efficient removal of water. Industrial-grade water extraction equipment is more effective in rapidly removing water from a water-damaged area due to several key factors:

Powerful Suction: Industrial-grade equipment, such as high-capacity water pumps and extractors, is designed with powerful suction capabilities. This suction force can quickly remove large volumes of water from surfaces and materials, making the extraction process faster and more efficient.

Large Capacity: These machines typically have larger holding tanks and can handle significant amounts of water in a single pass. This means fewer interruptions for emptying and reloading, allowing for continuous and efficient water removal.

Commercial Drying Power: Alongside extraction, industrial-grade equipment is often equipped with powerful drying capabilities. This helps reduce residual moisture levels in materials and surfaces, preventing secondary damage like mold growth or structural weakening.

Professional Expertise: When operated by trained professionals, these machines can strategically target specific areas and maximize water removal efficiency. Professionals understand how to navigate complex structural layouts and effectively mitigate water damage.

Time Efficiency: Rapid water removal prevents further damage and mold growth. Industrial-grade equipment minimizes the time water lingers, reducing the risk of long-term structural and health-related issues associated with water damage.

Sandbags Save Franklin Home from Flood Damage?

2/27/2024 (Permalink)

Sandbags prevent stormwater intrusion into a home. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams are trusted leaders in storm damage restoration services in Franklin. Sandbags are simple yet highly effective tools that can divert and control water flow, ultimately safeguarding your home. Here's how sandbags work and why they are valuable during rainstorms.

Diverting Water: Sandbags are strategically placed to redirect the water flow away from vulnerable areas. When properly positioned, they create a barrier that guides the water away from your property, preventing it from inundating your home.

Absorbing Water: Sandbags, when filled with sand, absorb and hold water, making them heavier and more effective at creating a barrier. This added weight keeps them in place, even in strong currents.

Quick Deployment: One of the advantages of sandbags is their ease of use. They can be quickly filled and placed when needed, making them a practical solution for flood prevention.

Cost-Effective: Sandbags are an affordable and reusable option for flood prevention. Once the storm has passed, you can store them for future use.

To effectively use sandbags, ensure they are properly filled and stacked in a pyramid or staggered pattern. Also, monitor and maintain them during the storm to address any shifts or breaches. By incorporating sandbags into your flood prevention strategy, you can significantly reduce the risk of water damage to your property during rainstorms.

Frozen Water in Downspout Causes Damage to Eugene Home?

2/13/2024 (Permalink)

Water is frozen in a downspout. We restore storm damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams are trusted storm damage restoration services leaders. Frozen water in rain gutters and downspouts can harm a house, especially in colder climates. Here are some examples of the damage that can occur:

Gutter Damage: Freezing water can cause gutters to warp, crack, or detach from the house due to ice expansion. This necessitates expensive repairs or replacements.

Downspout Blockages: Rainwater cannot drain properly from the roof when ice blocks downspouts. This leads to overflowing water, which may damage the siding, foundation, and landscaping.

Roof Damage: Ice dams formed in gutters can contribute to ice dams on the roof, leading to water seeping beneath shingles and causing roof leaks and structural damage.

Soffit and Fascia Damage: The weight of accumulated ice in gutters can stress and damage soffit and fascia boards along the eaves, potentially causing warping, rotting, or detachment.

Foundation Damage: Overflowing water from clogged downspouts or melting ice dams can saturate the soil around the foundation, resulting in foundation problems like cracks and settling.

Icicle Formation: Frozen water in gutters and downspouts can lead to the growth of heavy icicles, posing safety hazards and potentially causing damage to gutters and roofing materials.

Eugene Home Suffers Water Intrusion Damage from Recent Rainstorms?

1/30/2024 (Permalink)

Heavy rain causes water to pool in low-lying areas. We are leaders in storm damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams are highly trained and certified to restore storm damage in Eugene. Here are some examples of the damage heavy rain can cause to homes in Eugene:

Flooding: The Pacific Northwest, including Eugene, is susceptible to heavy rainfall, which can lead to localized or widespread flooding. Water can infiltrate crawl spaces and ground-level areas, causing structural damage, damaging possessions, and fostering mold growth.

Foundation Issues: Prolonged heavy rain can saturate the soil around a home's foundation, leading to hydrostatic pressure. This pressure can result in foundation cracks, shifts, or even complete failure, jeopardizing the structural integrity of the house.

Roof Leaks: Heavy rain can reveal roof vulnerabilities, such as damaged shingles or flashing. Leaks can lead to interior water damage, ceiling stains, and compromised insulation.

Mold and Mildew: Eugene's damp conditions make homes susceptible to mold and mildew growth, especially after heavy rain.

Erosion: Rainfall can erode soil and landscaping around a home, potentially causing property damage.

Utilities and Electrical Issues: Heavy rain can disrupt utilities, leading to power outages and water damage to electrical systems.

Freezing Temperatures Cause Frozen Pipe Damage in Eugene Home?

1/9/2024 (Permalink)

A person carries pipe insulation sheathing. We restore frozen pipe damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams are leaders in frozen pipe and water damage restoration services. Freezing temperatures bring the risk of frozen pipes so here are some tips for things that can be done to protect your pipes from freezing:

Insulate pipes: Insulate any exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like garages, crawlspaces, or exterior walls.

Seal gaps and cracks: Seal any gaps or cracks in your home's exterior walls to prevent cold air from infiltrating.

Keep a slow drip: When temperatures drop significantly, let a small amount of water trickle from a faucet. The movement of water can help prevent pipes from freezing.

Maintain indoor temperature: Keep your home comfortably warm, even when you're away. Avoid lowering the thermostat significantly during cold weather.

Open cabinet doors: If you have pipes running through cabinets, especially those along exterior walls, open the cabinet doors to allow warm air to reach the pipes.

Disconnect hoses: Disconnect and drain outdoor hoses to prevent water from freezing in them and potentially causing damage to the connected faucets or pipes.

Know the shut-off location: If a pipe does freeze and burst, you can quickly turn off the water to minimize damage.

Keep your garage door closed: If your garage contains water supply lines, keep the garage door closed to help maintain a warmer temperature inside.

Water Damage Caused by a Broken Pipe in Eugene Residence?

A room with water damage is shown where the drywall and carpet have been removed. We are a top choice for water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams restore water damage throughout the year in Eugene. A broken pipe in a home can cause a wide range of damage, and the extent of the damage depends on several factors, including the location of the pipe, the water pressure, the time it takes to discover and address the issue, and the size of the break. Here are some of the potential types and levels of damage that a broken pipe can cause:

Water Damage: The most immediate and common consequence of a broken pipe is water damage. Water can quickly flood the affected area, damaging floors, walls, ceilings, and personal belongings.

Mold and Mildew: If the water from the broken pipe is not promptly and thoroughly dried, it can create conditions favorable for mold and mildew growth.

Structural Damage: Prolonged water exposure can weaken the structural integrity of a home.

Electrical Issues: Water damage can affect electrical systems, creating a risk of short circuits or electrical fires. It's essential to turn off electricity to affected areas if it's safe to do so.

How Can I Prevent Tree Roots from Damaging My Pipes in Eugene?

11/27/2023 (Permalink)

Tree roots grow over pipes. We restore water damage 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County team is on call and ready to respond to water damage emergencies 365 days a year. Tree roots are a common cause of pipe failure in Eugene homes. Here are some things that can be done to prevent tree root damage to plumbing pipes:

Regular Maintenance: Periodically inspect your plumbing system for signs of root intrusion, such as slow drains or unusual gurgling noises.

Root Barriers: Installing root barriers, which are physical or chemical barriers designed to deter root growth in the direction of pipes, can help prevent root intrusion. These barriers are typically placed underground between trees and the pipes.

Selective Planting: When landscaping near your plumbing pipes, consider planting trees and shrubs with non-invasive root systems that are less likely to seek out pipes for moisture.

Pipe Replacement: In cases of severe root damage, it may be necessary to replace affected pipes with materials that are more resistant to root intrusion, such as PVC or ABS plastic.

Chemical Treatments: Root-killing chemicals can be used to eliminate or deter roots from growing into pipes. However, these should be used cautiously, as they can harm the environment and may require professional application.

If you suspect that tree roots have already infiltrated your plumbing pipes, it's advisable to consult a professional plumber or arborist to assess the extent of the damage.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County team has been restoring storm and flooding damage for many years. After any rain event, it is a good idea to inspect your crawl space for signs of water intrusion. Here are some signs that your crawl space may be compromised:

Efflorescence: White, powdery deposits (efflorescence) on surfaces like concrete walls can indicate the presence of water intrusion, as water carries minerals to the surface.

Musty Odors: A damp crawl space can develop musty and unpleasant odors due to mold and mildew growth, which thrive in moist environments.

Mold and Mildew Growth: Excessive moisture can lead to the growth of mold and mildew on surfaces, such as walls, floor joists, and insulation.

Visible Water Stains: Water stains on walls, floor surfaces, and other structural elements can indicate ongoing water intrusion or past water damage.

Wood Rot: Prolonged exposure to moisture can cause wooden components in the crawl space, such as floor joists and support beams, to rot and weaken.

Deteriorating Insulation: Moisture can damage insulation materials, reducing their effectiveness and potentially leading to energy inefficiency.

Rust and Corrosion: Metal components, such as support beams and hardware, can rust and corrode when exposed to water and moisture over time.

Standing Water: Puddles or standing water in the crawl space are clear signs of active water intrusion.

Insect Infestations: Damp environments attract pests like termites and cockroaches, which can thrive in such conditions.

Leaking Chimney Causes Water Damage Inside Eugene Home?

6/27/2023 (Permalink)

A chimney with missing caulking, torn flashing, and missing roof shingles is shown. We are leaders in rain damage restoration services in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams restore storm damage every year in Franklin. Sometimes the flashing around the perimeter of a chimney can pull away from the other roofing materials, allowing water to enter the home by leaking down around the chimney. At other times, the caulking between the chimney stones weakens and erodes, leaving dangerous gaps where water, air, and animals can enter the structure.

Some signs of chimney damage are more obvious than others. For instance, if a chimney has no cap or there are visible signs of cracking and broken apart masonry materials, water will enter the home. If you see noticeable signs of chimney damage, call a professional chimney repair technician to inspect your chimney before the next big storm.

Some visible signs of water intrusion from a roof or chimney leak include the following:

  • Water in the firebox
  • Dampness/staining on interior house walls and ceiling
  • Musty odors coming from the firebox or the attic
  • White discoloration on the chimney's external masonry
  • Chimney liner damage
  • Damper that won't open or close completely due to rust

Have you noticed uneven or squeaking floors or unpleasant odors in your home? If so, this may be a sign of high humidity and wood rot from standing water in the crawl space below your home. At least twice a year, and after any storm or flooding event, it is recommended to have your crawl space inspected for water damage.

When water damage is present, we use powerful, industrial-grade water extraction and drying equipment to quickly remove the water and dry the area completely. Damaged Rubber Dishwasher Door Seal Floods Kitchen Floor in Franklin Home?

5/9/2023 (Permalink)

A dishwasher reveals a plate with a frowning face drawn on it. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County teams have been restoring water damage for Franklin residents for many years. In fact, we respond to more water damage emergencies than any other form of property damage loss. One of the most common reasons for appliance failures is a cracked or leaking door seal on your dishwasher. Dishwashers use large amounts of water so when the door seal is damaged, water can escape and cause significant flood  damage in a short period of time.

Inspecting Appliances for Signs of Seal Failure

  • Check for cracks or worn surface areas in the door seal
  • Run your hand over the seal to locate any areas of the seal that feel brittle
  • Check for areas along the seal that are beginning to come loose
  • Look for excess steam being emitted from the dishwasher while it is running

If you observe any of these signs, replace the door seal right away. It is an inexpensive part that can save you thousands of dollars by avoiding costly water damage repairs.

What Are Some Signs of Water Intrusion Damage in Franklin?

4/11/2023 (Permalink)

A floor in a home is flooded. We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in Lane County.

Water intrusion is a term used by insurance companies to describe damage caused by water entering the home from an outside source. Some examples would be a clogged storm drain, rain gutter, or downspout causing water to enter and flood a structure. Roof damage is another way water can enter a home.

Our local North Eugene and Northwest Lane County team offer these helpful tips for identifying water intrusion damage:

  • Dents in your siding
  • Visible damage to the roof facia
  • Visible signs of the roof flashing
  • Water spots on your ceiling or walls

Visible Signs of Storm Damage from the Ground

  1. Collection of shingle granules – If you see an abundance of asphalt granules in your yard and landscaping, your roof has storm damage.
  2. Clogged Gutters – Leaking and clogged gutters often indicate roof storm damage. Unrepaired damage can cause your roof to leak and may cause foundation damage if the water is not draining away from the structure.
  3. Property damage – If your vehicles and property show signs of damage, your roof may have storm damage, too.
  4. Broken, cracked, and missing shingles – Check for missing and damaged shingles, including curled, cracked, or torn shingles. Wood shingles can show signs of splitting, curling, or decay, and low-slope roofs can have cracks, tears, wrinkles, and blisters.

How Can I Prevent Rainwater from Seeping Into My Basement in Eugene?

2/21/2023 (Permalink)

A home’s foundation is damaged from wetness. We are leaders in water damage restoration services in Lane County.

Eugene gets its share of rain, averaging 47 inches each year. When cracks form on foundation walls, water can seep into the structure, causing water damage. Our local team in North Eugene and Northwest Lane County responds to water damage emergencies throughout the year and offers these tips from the Insurance Information Institute for preventing basement water seepage:

  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you’ve never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.
  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall, potentially through any cracks.
  • Install a backwater valve. Though less common than other causes of basement water, sewer backups are messy. Learn more about your sewer responsibilities and install and maintain a backwater valve, which allows sewage to go out, but not come back in.
